Fashion Internship: Behind the Scenes

The Devil Wears Prada

Fashion Industry is a Bitch!

I have heard that myself many times and I bet you have too. Even so, millions of young girls and boys dream of being part of this glamour world. How many of us have fashion pages torn from Vogue’s last issue on your walls? Yes, I do too! I know one young gentleman who goes in this fantasy world to his work experience every day.

Who is he?

He is Diego Urbano, 1st year Footwear Design student in London College of Fashion and an intern in Nicholas Kirkwood.

He came last summer from Bilbao Spain to study Footwear: Product Design and Development in London. Even with English being his second language, Diego has the confidence to apply for internships straight at the top designers. Kirkwood saw his talent and determination and gave Diego the chance to be part of the amazing fashion brand Nicholas Kirkwood.

Nicholas Kirkwood Autumn/Winter 2011

Celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Rhianna, Kelly Rowland and Dasha Zhukova love Kirkwood!

” The start was really exciting, however I had to learn a lot and most importantly learn how to behave in a working environment, besides having to practice and improve my English all day long.”

He started as a part of the administrative department, but after a couple of months they have noticed that Diego can do more than paperwork and he got the chance to help the design department in more creative tasks. This helped him understand the industry better, because being part of different departments gave him deeper insights into the company. Diego met Nicholas Kirkwood the man himself. Diego said: ” The best thing about doing an internship in smaller companies is that you get to know everyone in charge of every department, you feel in a more personal and intimate environment.

“I also assisted Nicholas Kirkwood’s showroom in Paris during Fashion Week.”

His duties include assisting the designers and consultants, carrying out creative and visual research, project presentation development, sketching and illustration.

Diego feels that this internship is really fruitful.

I can ask for advice when I’ve got a school project and they are always happy to help me and give me their opinion and advice.”

And how has his opinion changed?

” It’s not all about a nice drawing or sketch, it needs to be brought to reality, turned into a product. I am now aware of how fast the rhythm of fashion goes, there is a lot of effort and work put into every single detail and shoe.”

The fashion world may be a tough one, but not everything inside is a scene from The Devil Wears Prada. Diego is a great example of that, a young man who came on his own from a foreign country to make him dream come true. Congratulations Diego, you are now a few steps closer!

My day without Facebook

Who would guess a few years ago that one website can have such an enormous impact on our everyday lives?  A bunch of colleague students created a platform that engaged millions of people everywhere and managed to steal the show off Skype and Messenger. These days Facebook is a massive and powerful tool for information sharing and communication.

It can be both really positive and far negative. I seriously cannot make up my mind what I think about it. Love it or Loathe it? At the end of the day it’s both a negative and a positive invention. I like the fact that I can see what is going on in the lives of my friends and family back home in Bulgaria. Facebook is very helpful when I have to contact people abroad, and I have to because I live in England. I don’t even want to start discussing the effect it has on my studies and specifically my concentration towards it, because it gives me a headache.

It’s the end of the term and my work is piling up, so I decided to make a little experiment with my will and myself.  One day without Facebook! Yes, you heard me right… 1 whole day!  So I asked my boyfriend to change my password and here it’s me and my no facebook life.

I woke up fairly early around 8am, I made myself coffee, turned on my laptop and I thought what people do first when they don’t have a facebook account.  So I went to the newsagency and bought the Guardian and a pack of pistachio nuts. I managed to read the whole newspaper, for less time than usual and without being distracted, by a stupid link someone shared on fb.

At 10am I was done with my breakfast and news and I had the whole day ahead of me.  I was supposed to meet a friend for a shopping trip, but I couldn’t facebook her about the time, so I called her and it felt so nice to actually hear her voice. Here I was, socializing out of the social network.

I spent a beautiful day outdoors, it was sunny and warm… Yes I was in England! After it, I went home opened my laptop, and there wasn’t anything to check so I decided to study: D And I did so. Three hours of studying, without being interrupted by the idea to check if I have a new friend request. It was so productive and I felt satisfied with myself.

Around 9ish a few friends called me and I didn’t have to say no, because I had to study. I managed to go out and actually communicate with friends.

What is my experience of a day without Facebook?

Great! I saved all those 10-15 mins on Facebook, and built a few hours time outdoors with my friends and I loved it.  I sometime think of deleting my account there, because I waste so much time without even realizing it. The truth is, I need it. Important part of my life is my friends back home, and Facebook has been quite helpful here. But, guys the life outside the network is so much more beautiful and meaningful… Embrace it!

The Morning After

Dear Ladies,

Here is a question for you: How do you feel, when you wake up next to your boy in the morning? Sexy, fresh, confident?  or you just run to the bathroom for a quick brush,  may be some lip balm, straighten a bit the “messy sex hair”… the list can be long.

Recently I’ve watched a movie called What’s your number. How can I say, it was silly in a funny way and I know many girls who can identify themselves with the main character? In one of the scenes she wakes up next to a one night stand and runs into the bathroom for a quick hair brush, mascara, lip gloss and of course teeth brush.  And let’s face, this scene from a comedy, is often a scene from our homes.

I have seen hundreds of articles in the web and in well-known women’s magazines giving girls advices on  How to prepare yourself for the first morning with him or How to impress him with your looks first thing in the morning, etc.  How about making this post all about YOU! Forget about the whole sex with sunglasses and morning make over and see where the confidence problem comes from.

1.       Take it easy with the revamp before a night out

Fake eyelashes, St Tropez, hair extensions, fake nails and sometimes heels your feet cannot handle. Does this sound familiar? I believe it does. Going from a Cover Girls the night before, to your normal self in the morning after let’s say is a big transformation. So be yourself, highlight your best features and body parts, but don’t change it completely. In 21st century Cinderella doesn’t really fit in. It’s better to be liked and accepted for who you really are.

2.      Love yourself and the rest will follow

Waking up early to put make up on just shows a confidence problem. You are who you are, and it is better to accept that and start loving yourself with and without make up. Because let’s face it according to the strong half of the manhood there is nothing sexier than a confident woman.

3.       Remove your make up the night before to avoid the panda effect

Remove your make up to avoid any surprises on the next morning.  Washing your face and brushing your teeth is a MUST. But honestly the make up from the night before is not classy.  Take care of your skin and put yourself first, then I can guarantee a success. As I already said Confidence is the tool.

And in the end if he doesn’t appreciate how you are first thing on the morning, your choice was wrong. But hey the search is not over; this is just the beginning of the journey.  Enjoy

What is your opinion on this, girls?
